Learning Through Unlearning
Creating a more accepting, inclusive world through education
We’ve all been guilty of ableism, myself included.
I’m coming out and saying it!
And for most of us, it’s not due to malice in our hearts, but a lack of understanding and insight into the disabled community and what the lives of disabled people are really like.
People with disabilities have been portrayed as helpless humans who got a bad lot in life. I believed it at one point. I struggled to accept my disability and my self because of this negative narrative that was adopted by all of society.
It took years of UNLEARNING for me to finally understand that…
Being disabled doesn’t equal a bad life
I am more than my disability
There is a world of fun, adventure, love, and success waiting for me.
This is the message of equality, of inclusion, and awareness that I want to bring to you and your community.
My Program
Duration: 60-90 minutes
Key talking points:
Sharing my story
How to be an ally
What ableism is and how to avoid it
Keys to being inclusive
How to effectively support disabled people
Throughout the session, I share a few songs that I wrote to help build on these talking points and help listeners connect to my story.
Optional:
Either during the entire speech, or simply parts of the program, the audience will be blindfolded for a taste of my signature program, Singing in the Dark, which gives the audience an opportunity to feel what it’s like to experience blindness, and the beauty that life with a disability can bring.
Two-Part Advocacy Speaking Series
As a disability coach and advocate, I specialize in empowering individuals with disabilities to effectively communicate their needs and set healthy boundaries in both personal and professional environments. When we honor these boundaries, we are creating a more inclusive and supportive workplace for everyone.
My two-part speaking series is designed to foster both individual self-advocacy and collective allyship in the workplace.
Session 1: Advocacy and Healthy Boundaries for Employees with Disabilities
I work directly with employees with disabilities to help them build the skills necessary to advocate for their needs confidently. We focus on setting and holding healthy boundaries, which not only support personal well-being but also contribute to a healthier, more connected team dynamic.
Session 2: Allyship and Advocacy for Non-Disabled Employees
I guide non-disabled employees on how to be effective allies and advocates for their disabled colleagues. Participants will learn strategies to create an inclusive environment, understand the importance of advocacy, and gain practical tools to support their coworkers with disabilities.
These sessions create a stronger, more inclusive workplace where everyone feels valued and supported.
